The "RoboCraft" studio intended to address the tension within the craftsmanship spectrum that exists in contemporary design: handcraft vs digital fabrication. There have been massive advancements in digital fabrication in recent years with the advent of laser cutting, CNC milling, and robotics, and the architectural profession is still trying to find the proper balance with just how we should be applying progressive fabrication techniques. We began the studio with a dual case study analysis; a natural structural element and a famous artist were to be researched, analyzed, and reinterpreted into an abstract design of a pavilion. For my project, I was interested in creating a design that utilized robotic welding to construct an intricate pavilion but still yielded a craftsman aesthetic that appeared unfinished, chaotic, and impossible to be constructed with robots.
